Expounding on the goldfish theory, first articulated in Mike’s guest editorial,
it is clear that the predilection is certainly very strong for the repetitive
orbiting without interruption of biking, yoga, and windsurfing. However,
we do have proof that it is possible to alter the routine. This is based
on first hand evidence, though we must admit, such evidence is only attainable
when the winds are below 30 knots. With diminished winds, we did experience expanded interest in the island surroundings. As reported in the weekly news, such delights included snorkeling, arboreta, waterfalls, plumes, and the natural highlight, a real red-hot, no Disney this, volcano, all interspersed with good conversation and abundant food. While visits to places of significant events of U.S. history, e.g., the beginning and end of World War II, were encapsulated within 4 hours at Pearl Harbor, and were indeed powerful, we did notice a certain twitch that began at the U.S.S. Missouri, “Big Mo”, (no relation), that could only be satisfied by a return to the previously described pattern. A hasty retreat to Maui followed. s We had a great time with Jon and Eric. We wish them another 3 weeks of great wind and happy sailing and look forward to their return from this wonderful mini-sabbatical to challenging and exciting new jobs which contribute to making the world a better place. |
